The Quiet Intensive Care Unit
Aishwarya Babu’s Medical Log: Day 4 - The Intensive Care Unit
Today is Thursday, June 27, 2024. It is my fourth day at Revathi Medical Center in Tamilnadu, India.
Today, the ICU was extremely quiet. Only one preexisting patient was admitted, but no new patients were admitted. So, we spent the whole day cleaning the ICU. The ICU is cleaned periodically to prevent the spread of infections from patients to staff. The lights and AC are swabbed to test for any infections.
While cleaning, I helped wipe the beds and rearrange the medicine cabinet. Sometimes, the ICU has to store medicine in the fridge. This happens when they run out of space in their medicine cabinet or if the medication could spoil without refrigeration.
Aishwarya Babu’s Medical Log: Day 5 - The Intensive Care Unit
Today is Friday, June 28, 2024. Today is my fifth day at Revathi Medical Center in Tamilnadu, India. It is also my third day in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
When I came into the ICU today, there were four newly admitted patients. One of them was even in the isolation room. When I arrived, they were about to perform an X-ray on one of the patients, so most of the nursing staff and I had to wait outside the room to not be affected by the powerful radiation.
Aside from that, the ICU was relatively quiet. The ICU is almost always quiet because the patients there are usually high-risk patients, mostly those who are elderly. Therefore, the patients are more often than not sleeping peacefully. Today, all the patients were sleeping for almost my entire shift aside from when they were awoken to eat or drink something.
During my shift, I learned how to cut gauze and how to mark the patient’s charts. While I was learning to do so, the patient in the isolation room had to get her blood drawn. I found that the reason she was in the ICU was because her uterus didn’t decrease after giving birth like it should have.
That was all we did in the ICU today, so my day ended with a little more cleaning before I went home. My fifth day was pretty quiet, but I learned that X-ray radiation is extremely powerful.
Aishwarya Babu’s Medical Log: Day 6 - The Intensive Care Unit
Today is Saturday, June 29, 2024. It is my sixth day at Revathi Medical Center in Tamilnadu, India, and it is my fourth day in the ICU.
Today the ICU has six admitted patients, two of which had come from the emergency room. All of these patients were asleep for my entire shift. However, the patient from yesterday who was kept in the isolation room is awake today. They brought her some juice and worked on helping her walk today.
That was all that happened in the ICU today, so I just helped the lead nurse of the ICU log attendance.
That concludes my stay at the ICU and my sixth day at Revathi Medical Center. I loved the ICU and how quiet it was while I was there, but I think I prefer the emergency room a little more.
